British Hen Welfare Trust Re-homing Day 10/06/2018

What a day! Over 500 hens saved from slaughter, re-homed from our field! We’d been keen to make available our location as a BHWT re-homing point, and when our team’s usual venue wasn’t available we were able to step in and offer our field. In the space of a few days, we had a field

Fly High Harebell

Today we lost Harebell. She was one of the 11 hens that became ‘The Petunias’ that were re-homed in August 2017 and had over 270 days with us. Harebell arrived as one of the most feather-bare and nervous hens we’ve re-homed. She didn’t like being around the others at all, and after settling them all

Hentastic’s New Foraging Cake Recipe

Hentastic recently got in touch and asked if the girls would like to try out their new recipe for their Foraging Cakes; the mix has been updated to include more herbs in the Mint & Parsley Foraging Cakes, and it now has more herbs than before – which sounds like a good thing! As always,

Electric Fence Extension

We recently added another 25 metres of electric fencing to our system to give the hens more space as well as to let the ground recover from the demolition the girls had done to it over the winter! We use Hotline Poultry Netting which is straightforward to install and extends the netting we currently use.

The Roses 6 Month Henniversary

The first milestone for The Roses today as they celebrated 6 months with us! This is the group of 10 hens we re-homed in November 2017, named after Rose, and sadly Mary is no longer with us but the other 9 have now reached the 6 month mark – the absolute minimum that we hope

Fly High Marigold

Today we said goodbye to Marigold. She was one of the 7 hens that became ‘The Hazels’ that were rehomed in July 2017 and had 10 months with us. Of those 7 hens there were a few that were poorly with limps so the group was fragmented from the start with only Marigold and Honeysuckle

Hazel and Marigold go to the Vet

Marigold has been unwell for about 2 weeks and Hazel’s health has taken a dip the last day so time to go back to the vet to get them checked over again. Marigold has been very quiet recently and despite being on antibiotics, anti-inflamtories and steroids, she wasn’t improving. After an examination, the vet found

We got a wonderful package in the post today – 12 greetings cards from the lovely Elaine Innes at Beefree Designs that she sent to us to sell to raise funds for the hens. The cards are beautiful, and we received the ‘Roaming Free’ series of 3 cards whose designs were inspired by Jo Barlow’s

Lupin has gone downhill the last couple of days and Harebell and Jasmine were due a check-up after their visit to the vet a few weeks ago, so all 3 hens put their seatbelts on and we drove to the vets. Unfortunately Lupin’s condition wasn’t good. Despite medication for the last 2 weeks there were
