Today we lost Iris. She was one of the group of 12 hens that we named ‘The Laurels’ that were re-homed in May 2017 and she had 1 year and 2 months with us.
When she arrived she looked similar to another hen we had, Pumpkin, and we gave her the nickname ‘Little Pumps’ – we have a lovely picture of them two of them together – almost like mother and daughter! She embraced her new life from day one, jumping on top of the coop door those first few evenings to perch and throwing herself into ‘being a hen’. She quickly settled and enjoyed foraging, dustbathing, sunbathing, and doing all the things that a hen likes to do.
Unfortunately, she developed a tumour a few months ago and managed to cope with it until it noticeably affected her demeanour yesterday, and she died in her sleep last night.
Fly high sweet girl.
