A thoroughly rewarding two days volunteering as part of the British Hen Welfare Trust stand at Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC in Birmingham.
I volunteered for Thursday and Saturday and after an early start to check the girls were OK and administer medicine to Larkspur and Gertrude, headed off to Birmingham. Traffic was worse on Thursday, but I still arrived with plenty of time to spare and familiarise myself with the venue and the stand, which looked great!
Both days flew by – Saturday was expectedly busier than Thursday – but a great two days talking all things hens: re-homings, the BHWT, hen welfare and the great pets that ex-battery hens are! As usual a great group of BHWT volunteers at the stand and it was good to meet Debbie from Hen Central and put a face to the emails and get some insight into what happens behind the scenes to organise the re-homings.
It’s great to help at these shows and speak to the visitors to the stand, whether it’s to previous adopters, potential new re-homers or to raise awareness of the different farming methods for eggs in this country.
