Last autumn we made some Apple Cider Vinegar for the hens and today was time for them to sample this delight!
Apple Cider Vinegar is added to the hens drinking water at a rate of around 2% and has many health benefits. Being acidic gives it mild antiseptic and antibiotic properties as well as containing a selection of vitamins and minerals to improve their overall wellbeing.
We chopped up some apples and added water to them ensuring that all the apple pieces were covered then placed a kitchen towel over the bucket. The mixture was then left in a cool dark room for at least a week to allow a foam to form on the top of the liquid then poured into bottles to allow the vinegar to fully form. After about 6 weeks the Apple Cider Vinegar should be ready and the ‘mother’ – the film on the top of the liquid that contains all the goodness – should be visible – and it was!
We filled up the drinkers with the diluted Apple Cider Vinegar and left the girls to enjoy it – we’ll add this to their water for one week every month.
